Birthplace to a number of cultural movements including hip hop, salsa and Broadway, New York is as cool a place as they come. Aptly named the city that never sleeps, the atmosphere is electric, whilst the multitude of activities and attractions on offer are both interesting and varied. For example, boasting over 28,000 acres of public parkland and 14 miles of open beaches, there is a plethora of activities to do and sights to see that won't cost you a penny. Both the Brooklyn and New York Botanical Gardens offer days where the entrance fee is waivered, as does the Bronx Zoo. And, what could be more relaxing than wandering around a green haven in the midst of the busy city?
If it's your first time in New York and you want a chance to explore some of the city's more interesting neighbourhoods then it can be a good idea to seek out one of the Big Apple Greeters. Friendly and informed they are a popular attraction, so make sure you book early. There are also a number of other groups, such as The Village Alliance, which offer free guided tours of specific areas: a quick internet search will throw them up!
If you're travelling with your family and are stuck for ideas on how to entertain the children, don't despair – there are also a number of free activities for them to do. For instance, the Brooklyn Children's Museum is a great place, containing both fun and educational elements. Alternatively, the Children's Museum of Arts lets them do what they do best: get messy! It should be noted here that although there is no entrance fee, visitors are expected to make a donation.
If it's a slice of culture that you're after however, then look no further than the Queen's Library. A quick look at their website will provide details of any free activities, such as concerts, performances or poetry readings that are going on. Wave Hill, on the other hand, is renowned for its author readings. Entry is free every Tuesday, but again make sure you get along there early as it is popular!
